The Ficus Elastica Tineke, better known as the Indian rubber tree, is a striking houseplant with an interesting past. Until well into the 20th century this plant was an important source for rubber production. The Tineke is a variegated variety within the huge Ficus family, which counts more than 1,000 species, often so different you'd never guess they were related. Most Ficus species originate from tropical Asia, where they grow into impressive trees.

The Ficus Tineke is an easy houseplant to look after, though it can be a little sensitive to changes in its surroundings. Is the plant leaning to one side? Don't turn it all at once, but a little each day so it can adjust calmly. Big changes can make it drop leaves.
