Looking for the perfect basket for your houseplant? We'd recommend taking a look at our range of wicker baskets. Wicker baskets are often used outdoors, but they look fantastic indoors too. A houseplant in a wicker basket has a calm, relaxed feel and fits perfectly in an urban-style home. In fact, a wicker basket is at home in any room, because let's be honest, they're just fantastic, aren't they?

Why you need a wicker basket!

A houseplant in a wicker basket is a real eye-catcher: it makes your green friend look even better! By putting your plant in a wicker basket you can easily create a playful corner. Combine small wicker baskets with slightly larger ones and vary the colours and weaves. It's an easy way to create your own botanical corner.

The history of wicker baskets

Wicker baskets are woven, an age-old technique that goes back a very long way. Because wicker is a fairly perishable material, no ancient baskets have survived. Yet there are clear signs that wicker baskets were being made and used far back in time: impressions have been found that show wickerwork. In prehistoric times, wickerwork was used for all sorts of purposes. The walls of houses were woven, and baskets were already being woven for storage. Wickerwork was also popular back then because it needed no tools; everything was made by hand.

What are wicker baskets made of?

In terms of looks there are many different kinds of wicker basket. That comes down to shape and colour, but also to the type of material used. Not all wicker baskets are actually made of wicker; the baskets are made from many different materials. The most common is osier, a type of willow that comes in three different varieties:

  • Grey willow: This is the natural, untreated product. With grey willow the bark isn't removed, so it's dark in colour.
  • Buff willow: These rods are boiled and, after 24 hours, peeled by machine to remove the bark. The rods are then reddish-brown, a very common colour in wicker baskets.
  • White willow: This is the most common variety. The willow is stood in water so that it keeps growing, after which the bark can be removed easily. The colour is quite pale.

Rattan is another widely used material for wicker baskets. Rattan comes from the rattan palm; it's the stems of this palm that are used for weaving. The rattan palm is a climbing palm and grows 25 to 40 metres in a single year! Rattan also has a processed form known as cane. At heart, cane is still rattan, but because it's cut into different thicknesses it takes on a different look. Cane is also often bleached to give it a white or lighter colour.

Finally, reed is also widely used, especially for indoor baskets. That's because reed is a lot softer; it's a somewhat more delicate material. This is exactly what makes reed so popular for baskets, as it's easy to colour and shape. So there's always a suitable wicker basket for your green friend.

Suitable houseplants for a wicker basket

Really, every houseplant can go in a wicker basket. Even so, we've put together a top 5 of houseplants that look even better in a wicker basket!

Wicker basket for a cactus

Our all-time favourite houseplant to put in a wicker basket is the cactus. A cactus is a seriously striking houseplant that you simply can't ignore! The cactus is a super-easy houseplant that drinks very little, so you hardly ever need to water it. This houseplant is practically indestructible, but too much water can still finish it off, so watch out for that. As for where to put it, you can place this easy houseplant anywhere as long as it's in the sun. The cactus is a sun worshipper and doesn't like draughts or wind.

Wicker basket for a Monstera

There are a great many different Monstera houseplants, and they all look fantastic in a wicker basket. From small to large, there's a suitable basket for every Swiss cheese plant! With a Monstera houseplant you can easily turn your living room into a real urban jungle. Its wonderfully large leaves make it a top addition to any houseplant collection. The bigger the leaves, the bigger the holes. You might not expect it, but this tropical houseplant doesn't ask for much care. As long as the soil around the houseplant is slightly moist, this beautiful houseplant is perfectly content. Give the Monstera a splash of water every week. It isn't very fussy about its spot either: put the houseplant somewhere bright, but not in direct sunlight.

Wicker basket for a palm

The palm is the ultimate houseplant for a wicker basket. A wicker basket already has a summery feel of its own, and a palm completes the picture. The perfect match! Add an 'exotic touch' to your urban jungle with a trendy palm, whatever the size. Palms don't need a great deal of care, but they are and always will be tropical houseplants by origin, which means they can't do without attention. Because of its tropical roots the palm likes moist soil, but be careful: the roots mustn't stand in a layer of water. That leads to root rot, which you want to avoid. The palm wants a spot with plenty of daylight but out of direct sun, which is just a little too much of a good thing for its beautiful leaves.

Wicker basket for a Chinese money plant

Chinese money plants are real must-haves these days! Wonderfully charming little houseplants with a quirky look. This trendy houseplant is known for the round leaves on its stems, which are reminiscent of pancakes (hence its nickname, the pancake plant). Chinese money plants are super-easy to live with, and you'll enjoy them for a long time. Give this houseplant a splash of water once a week and it will be perfectly happy. Just be careful not to overwater, as it won't thank you for that. Put the Chinese money plant in a bright spot but out of direct sunlight, which its pancake-shaped leaves won't appreciate.

Wicker basket for a Sansevieria

The Sansevieria, what a great houseplant, and it looks even better in a wicker basket. The Sansevieria is also known as the snake plant and is a truly easy-care houseplant. This green houseplant has beautiful long, upright leaves with white stripes along the edges. Perfect for a retro or minimalist home. And conveniently, the Sansevieria Laurentii is super-easy to care for! The important thing is never to give the Sansevieria too much water, as that can finish it off. If you're unsure whether it's time to water again, we'd advise waiting a little longer. The Sansevieria can stand anywhere: in the shade, in direct sunlight or in partial shade, it really doesn't mind. Super-easy.
