Care & tips for the Orchid (Phalaenopsis)

Many people think an orchid is hard to care for. Understandable, because surely such a gorgeous flowering plant needs lots of attention? Luckily, it's nothing like that! Once you've found the right spot, your orchid needs hardly any extra care and you'll enjoy its stunning flowers for a long time.

How much water does the Orchid need?

The orchid is one of the easier houseplants and only needs water once a week. In summer that's weekly on average, while in winter you only need to water once every ten to twelve days.

How you water an orchid, though, is a little different from what you may be used to. It's best to take the whole root ball out of the pot and place it in a bowl of water. Leave the root ball in the water for about ten minutes so it can drink properly, then let it drain well. This prevents water sitting in the bottom of the pot, which can cause root rot, and we don't want that, of course!

How much light does the Orchid need?

This tropical houseplant needs a spot with enough indirect sunlight; a north-east facing windowsill would be ideal. Protect your orchid from direct sunlight, as it can scorch the leaves.

Is the orchid a toxic houseplant?

This gorgeous plant isn't toxic! A great match for children and pets.

How an Orchid flowers

The Phalaenopsis orchid is a houseplant that flowers up to three times a year, with each flowering lasting between 2 and 6 months. That means you can enjoy its beautiful flowers all year round! You don't need to cut back the orchid's stems to get new flowers. If the stems get too long, though, you can simply cut them off and put the flowers in a small vase for extra atmosphere at home.

How is my Orchid shipped?

These houseplants are delivered in nursery pots. All our houseplants are shipped in boxes we designed ourselves: a snug inner fitting keeps the plants firmly in place so they can't shift in transit. Plants don't mind a day in a dark box, so your green friends arrive home in perfect condition.
