Product Description

The Winter aconite bulbs Cilicica are tubers of a winter aconite from Asia Minor with golden-yellow, cup-shaped flowers. Each flower sits in a ruff of finely cut, bronze-green leaves. The plants stay low, about 8 to 10 centimetres. From February they colour the bare garden yellow, at a time when hardly anything else is flowering.

The tubers are size 4/5. They belong under trees and shrubs, at the front of the border or in a pot or container by the window, where you can enjoy the early flowers. With 25 pieces you brighten up a pot or a small spot under a shrub, with 50 pieces a yellow patch in the border. With 100 or 200 pieces a golden carpet forms under trees; allow 50 to 100 pieces per square metre. Combine them with other early flower bulbs, such as snowdrops, for a white and yellow winter scene. You will find more greenery for outdoors among our outdoor plants.

When should you plant the Winter aconite bulbs Cilicica?

The Winter aconite bulbs Cilicica go into the ground in autumn, from mid-October to the end of November, once the soil has cooled below 10 °C. In a frost-free December it is still possible. Preferably plant them as early as you can within that period, because the hard tubers dry out easily. For that reason, soak them overnight in lukewarm water first. Without winter cold they will not flower, so we advise against spring planting.

When do the Winter aconite bulbs Cilicica flower?

The Winter aconite bulbs Cilicica flower in February and March, often at the same time as the snowdrops. The flowers open in sunshine and close in cold and rain, which keeps them attractive for about three weeks. After a mild winter they start earlier, after a harsh winter somewhat later. In a spot they like, they self-seed, so the yellow patches grow larger year after year.

Care and tips Winter aconite bulbs Cilicica

Plant the soaked tubers about 5 centimetres deep and 5 to 8 centimetres apart. It is often hard to tell which side is up; in that case simply lay them on their side, and they will find their own way. Winter aconites like humus-rich, chalky soil that drains well. A pot needs a drainage layer and holes in the base; choose a suitable one from our outdoor pots and baskets. Let the foliage yellow after flowering and leave the seed pods if you want them to spread. A little leaf mould in autumn is enough as food.

Water needs of the Winter aconite bulbs Cilicica

During growth in winter and early spring the soil is usually moist enough. After flowering the plants retreat underground and cope well with a drier summer. Only in a pot do you need to pay attention: keep the compost lightly moist from the first shoots and make sure water never stands.

Light needs of the Winter aconite bulbs Cilicica

A spot in partial shade or partial sun is ideal. Under deciduous trees they get all the sun in February that the flowers need to open, and later in the year the shade of the canopy. In deep, dark shade they flower less freely.

Are the Winter aconite bulbs Cilicica toxic?

The Winter aconite bulbs Cilicica are toxic if ingested; this applies to all parts of the plant. Keep them out of reach of pets and young children, and wear gloves when planting the tubers.

How will my Winter aconite bulbs Cilicica be shipped?

Your bulbs are carefully packed and shipped. That way they arrive safely and fresh from the grower.
