Product Description

The Tulip bulbs Black are bulbs of a tulip with deep black, velvety flowers. The cups sit on long, straight stems and grow to around 55 to 60 centimetres tall. Thanks to those long stems this tulip is also very suitable as a cut flower; in a vase the dark colour gives a stylish contrast.

The bulbs are size 10/11 and each produce one flower. Plant them in groups so the dark colour shows at its best, in the border, along the path or in a planter on the patio. With 35 bulbs you fill a large planter or two pots of about 35 centimetres, with 70 bulbs a strip along the path. With 140 or 280 bulbs you can plant a whole bed; allow 50 to 70 bulbs per square metre. Combine them with other tulip bulbs that flower at the same time, such as white or orange tulips that make the black stand out. You will find more greenery for outdoors among our outdoor plants.

When should you plant the Tulip bulbs Black?

The best time to plant the Tulip bulbs Black is from mid-October to the end of November, once the soil has cooled to below 10 °C. The bulbs will then still form roots before winter without sprouting too early. As long as the ground is not frozen, you can plant until December. The bulbs need the winter cold to flower in April and May, so do not plant them in spring.

When do the Tulip bulbs Black flower?

The Tulip bulbs Black flower late in the tulip season, from late April to mid-May. Each flower stays beautiful for about two to three weeks. In a pot in a warm spot they often flower a week earlier, after a cold spring a little later. If you let the foliage die back after flowering, they will return next spring.

Care and tips Tulip bulbs Black

Plant the bulbs pointed end up, about 12 to 15 centimetres deep and 8 to 10 centimetres apart. For the vase, cut the stems when the bud is just showing colour. Tulips like well-drained soil; if your garden stays wet, mix some sand into the soil. In a pot, give them a drainage layer of gravel or clay pebbles; among our outdoor pots and baskets you will find a suitable model. After flowering, only cut off the spent flower and leave the foliage until it turns yellow, so the bulb stores food for next year. A little bulb fertiliser in autumn or early spring is enough.

Water needs of the Tulip bulbs Black

In open ground the bulbs need little water. Only water after planting if the autumn is very dry. In a pot, water about once a week in spring as soon as the leaves appear. Never leave water standing in the saucer, because bulbs in wet soil will rot.

Light needs of the Tulip bulbs Black

Give them a sunny spot with at least six hours of sun a day. In full sun the stems stay strong and the flowers get their deepest colour. In partial shade they flower too, but with slightly longer stems and less abundantly.

Are the Tulip bulbs Black toxic?

The Tulip bulbs Black are mildly toxic if ingested, especially the bulb itself. Keep them out of reach of pets and young children. The sap can irritate sensitive skin, so wear garden gloves when planting.

How will my Tulip bulbs Black be shipped?

Your bulbs are carefully packed and shipped. That way they arrive safely and fresh from the grower.
