Fargesia bamboo care

Fargesia is a non-invasive ornamental bamboo (Fargesia spp.) that's becoming increasingly popular in gardens. Unlike invasive bamboo species such as Phyllostachys, Fargesia forms compact clumps without an aggressive root system, making it ideal for smaller gardens, borders or as a green hedge.

Best location for Fargesia bamboo

This bamboo species originally comes from the mountainous regions of China, where it grows in a cooler climate. That makes it excellently suited to the European climate. Fargesia does well in a spot with partial shade to full sun. Preferably place the plant sheltered from dry, cold wind, as strong wind, especially in winter, can cause the leaves to dry out and discolor.

Watering Fargesia bamboo

Water regularly, especially during the first years after planting and during dry periods. Keep the soil evenly moist, without letting water stand at the roots. Are the leaves curling up? That's a clear sign the plant is thirsty and needs water.

A Fargesia in a pot is entirely dependent on the care you provide: the root ball dries out faster than in open ground, so check more often during warm periods whether the soil still feels moist.

Is Fargesia bamboo winter hardy?

Yes, and that's one of this plant's biggest advantages. Fargesia is very winter hardy and tolerates temperatures down to around -20°C. Soil and feeding for Fargesia

Use nutrient-rich, moisture-retentive soil with good drainage, for example garden soil supplemented with vulcastrat for extra drainage. In spring and summer, feed with bamboo fertilizer or general garden plant feed for healthy growth and beautiful deep green leaves. In autumn and winter, stop feeding altogether, as the plant doesn't need it during this dormant period.

Pruning Fargesia bamboo

Because Fargesia doesn't spread, drastic pruning isn't necessary, the plant already keeps itself neatly in shape. In spring, however, remove old, dried-out stems at ground level and occasionally thin out the clump with sharp, clean pruning shears, keeping the plant airy and healthy.

Does Fargesia spread like other bamboo?

No, and that's exactly why this bamboo species is so popular. Invasive bamboo species such as Phyllostachys spread via underground runners and quickly require a root barrier. Fargesia, on the other hand, grows as a compact clump that stays neatly in place, making it extremely well suited to smaller gardens.

Propagating Fargesia

The easiest way to propagate this bamboo is by dividing the root ball in spring. Dig up part of the clump with enough roots and shoots and plant it separately. Keep the soil evenly moist until the new plant is well established.

Common problems with Fargesia

This bamboo is generally strong and low-maintenance, but small problems can sometimes occur.

Yellow leaves: usually indicates drought or a nutrient deficiency. First check that the soil isn't too dry, and feed with bamboo fertilizer or garden plant feed during the growing season

Leaves curling up: a clear sign the plant is thirsty, water as soon as you notice this

Leaf drop in winter: a limited amount of leaf drop in the first winter after planting is normal and nothing to worry about
