Placement

• Scheffleras love plenty of light, but not direct sunlight. Too much sun can bleach or burn the leaves.
• A spot near an east- or west-facing window is ideal.
• The plant grows best in temperatures between 16°C and 24°C.

Water and humidity

• Water the Schefflera moderately. Allow the topsoil to dry slightly before watering again.

Why does my Schefflera appear to be growing in an elongated or sluggish manner?

This is usually due to insufficient light. In a location that is too dark, the plant will grow slowly and the stems will become long and thin. Place the plant closer to a window (not in direct sunlight).

Can the Schefflera be placed in a bathroom or dark room?

It is fairly tolerant and can be placed in rooms with less light, but it will grow less quickly and may become leggy. Ideally, you should choose a bright space.

How do I know when to repot my Schefflera?

• Roots are coming out of the drainage hole or lying on top of the soil. • Growth is severely stunted; soil is depleted or compacted. • Repot once every 2-3 years or as soon as these signs appear. Choose a pot that is only 1-2 cm larger in diameter than the current one to avoid overpotting.

The Schefflera is a strong houseplant that already grows well with minimal attention. Still, a few important care tips will keep your umbrella plant an eye-catcher for years to come.

Best spot for the Schefflera

The Schefflera loves a bright spot with indirect sunlight. Too little light makes the plant leggy and causes it to drop leaves, while direct sunlight can scorch the foliage.
An east- or west-facing window is perfect. Near a south-facing window, place the plant a little further away from the glass.

Watering the Schefflera

The Schefflera dislikes wet feet. Let the top layer of the potting soil dry out first before watering again. In summer you water on average once a week. In winter: less often, depending on the temperature and humidity.

Watch out: too much water quickly leads to yellow leaves or root rot. So make sure you use a pot with drainage holes.

Humidity and temperature

The Schefflera originally comes from tropical regions and feels comfortable at room temperatures between 16 and 24°C. Although the plant does not need extremely high humidity, it does appreciate having its leaves misted now and then with a plant sprayer to remove dust and stay fresh.

Do not place the plant too close to a radiator or in a draught, it does not like that.

Schefflera pot and soil

Use an airy, well-draining potting soil. A standard houseplant mix works perfectly.
Make sure the pot has drainage holes so that excess water can drain away easily.

Repot the plant every 2 to 3 years, preferably in spring, when growth gets going. This gives the roots room and keeps the plant healthy.

Feeding the Schefflera

During the growing season (March to September) you can give the Schefflera some houseplant fertiliser once a month. In autumn and winter (October to February) the plant is dormant, so it does not need any extra feeding.

Pruning the Schefflera

The Schefflera is easy to prune and actually responds positively to it. Pruning helps keep the plant compact and full. Cut long or bare stems back to the desired length; new shoots will appear by themselves.
Also remove dead or yellowed leaves to keep the plant looking tidy.

Propagating the Schefflera

You can easily propagate a Schefflera from cuttings. Cut off a young, healthy stem of about 10 cm and place it in water or moist potting soil. Roots will form within a few weeks. Once the cutting is well rooted, you can repot it into its own pot.

Common problems with the Schefflera

As with any houseplant, problems can arise, usually caused by too much or too little water or light.

Yellow leaves: often a sign of too much water or too little light.
Leaf drop: can occur due to draughts, sudden temperature changes or air that is too dry.
