Product Description

The Dasylirion Longissimum garden plant - 110 cm is a compact grass tree with a full, round crown of hundreds of narrow, blue-green leaves. Where the larger specimens already show a clear trunk, this size is still nicely compact: the leaves start just above the pot and together form a perfect sphere. That gives it a clean, graphic look, and it also fits in places where a large tree would be too much.

At 110 cm this is a handy size for the patio, the balcony or a small city garden. Place it in a large pot next to the front door, as an eye-catcher in a gravel garden or in a row along the path. Combine it with grasses, lavender or other Mediterranean plants for a southern atmosphere. Want more height? There are also specimens of 120 and 140 cm. You will find even more greenery for outdoors among our outdoor plants.

Care and tips for the Dasylirion Longissimum garden plant - 110 cm

This grass tree is strong and needs little attention. Plant it in sandy, well-draining soil or give it a roomy pot with a generous drainage layer of gravel or clay pebbles. With this compact size in particular, a pot on the patio is a great choice; among our outdoor pots and baskets you will find a model sturdy enough for its full crown. Preferably use potting soil for cacti or Mediterranean plants, mixed with some extra sand.

It hardly needs feeding: an organic garden fertiliser in spring is enough. Now and then remove a dried leaf at the bottom with sharp scissors to keep the sphere neat. The Dasylirion copes well with cold as long as the soil stays dry. If it is in a pot, place it on pot feet in winter and preferably under a canopy or against a sheltered wall. In severe frost you can temporarily cover the crown with garden fleece.

Water needs of the Dasylirion Longissimum garden plant - 110 cm

This drought lover needs little water. During the growing season, water about once or twice a week, and only when the soil is properly dry. A plant in a pot dries out faster than one in the ground, so check the pot a little more often in warm spells. In winter it needs hardly any water. Never let water stand in the saucer, because wet roots are the biggest risk for this plant.

Light needs of the Dasylirion Longissimum garden plant - 110 cm

Give it the sunniest spot you have, ideally facing south or west. In full sun the leaf sphere stays compact and the leaves get their beautiful blue-green colour. It also grows in partial shade, but a bit more slowly and less full.

Is the Dasylirion Longissimum garden plant - 110 cm toxic?

The Dasylirion Longissimum is mildly toxic if ingested. Keep it out of reach of pets and young children.
