Is the Yucca Rostrata winter-hardy?

Yes, the Yucca Rostrata is known as one of the most winter-hardy yuccas and, in well-draining soil, tolerates temperatures down to around -20°C. It's not the cold itself but the combination of frost and a wet crown that's dangerous. During prolonged hard frost or continuous rain, loosely cover the crown with garden fleece or jute (never plastic) and remove it again as soon as the sun comes out, so mould can't develop.

How much water does the Yucca Rostrata need?

Very little. During the growing season (April to September), water only once the top 5 to 10 centimetres of soil feel completely dry, which in a hot summer works out to about once a week. In winter, water needs are minimal to none: once a month is often enough, and only if the soil is bone dry. Overwatering is the number one cause of death for this plant.

A brown or yellow edge on the lowest, oldest leaves is a natural ageing process and no cause for concern. Does the whole crown turn yellow, or does the base of the trunk feel soft? That's usually a sign of overwatering or poorly draining soil, which can lead to root or crown rot. If so, stop watering immediately and improve the drainage.

How fast does a Yucca Rostrata grow and how tall does it get?

The Yucca Rostrata is a very slow grower: the trunk usually gains only a few centimetres a year. Eventually the plant can reach 3 to 4 metres tall, but that can take decades. This slow growth also makes it well suited to long-term life in a pot.
