Product Description

The Tulip bulbs Praestans mix are bulbs of botanical tulips from the Tulipa praestans group, in a blend of colours ranging from pastel to fiery. They stay compact at around 25 to 30 centimetres tall and often carry several flowers per stem. Botanical tulips are strong and weather-resistant and return year after year in a good spot.

The bulbs are size 8/9, a normal size for these smaller tulips. Thanks to their low, sturdy growth they look lovely at the front of the border, along the path or in a pot or planter on the patio, and they also make good cut flowers for a small vase. With 25 bulbs you fill a pot of about 40 centimetres, with 50 bulbs a spot in the border. With 100 or 200 bulbs you can plant a whole bed; allow 50 to 70 bulbs per square metre. Combine them with other tulip bulbs that flower early in the season. You will find more greenery for outdoors among our outdoor plants.

When should you plant the Tulip bulbs Praestans mix?

The best time to plant the Tulip bulbs Praestans mix is from mid-October to the end of November, once the soil has cooled to below 10 °C. The bulbs will then still form roots before winter without sprouting too early. As long as the ground is not frozen, you can plant until December. The bulbs need the winter cold to flower in March and April, so do not plant them in spring.

When do the Tulip bulbs Praestans mix flower?

The Tulip bulbs Praestans mix flower early in the tulip season, from March into April. Each flower stays beautiful for about two weeks, and because many stems carry several buds, a group often lasts a little longer. In a pot in a warm spot they flower earlier, after a cold spring a little later. In a sunny spot with dry summer soil, botanical tulips return well and the clumps often become fuller after a few years.

Care and tips Tulip bulbs Praestans mix

Plant the bulbs pointed end up, about 10 centimetres deep and 5 to 8 centimetres apart. Botanical tulips like well-drained, preferably somewhat sandy soil; if your garden is heavy or stays wet, mix some sand into the soil. In a pot, give them a drainage layer of gravel or clay pebbles; among our outdoor pots and baskets you will find a suitable model. After flowering, cut off the spent flowers and leave the foliage until it turns yellow. A little bulb fertiliser in early spring is enough.

Water needs of the Tulip bulbs Praestans mix

In open ground the bulbs need little water. Only water after planting if the autumn is very dry. In a pot, water about once a week in spring as soon as the leaves appear. Never leave water standing in the saucer, because bulbs in wet soil will rot.

Light needs of the Tulip bulbs Praestans mix

Give them a sunny spot with at least six hours of sun a day. In full sun the stems stay strong and the flowers get their best colour. In partial shade they flower too, but with slightly longer stems and less abundantly.

Are the Tulip bulbs Praestans mix toxic?

The Tulip bulbs Praestans mix are mildly toxic if ingested, especially the bulb itself. Keep them out of reach of pets and young children. The sap can irritate sensitive skin, so wear garden gloves when planting.

How will my Tulip bulbs Praestans mix be shipped?

Your bulbs are carefully packed and shipped. That way they arrive safely and fresh from the grower.
