Product Description

The Allium bulbs Purple-White mix are bulbs of ornamental onion in a blend of purple and white alliums. Each bulb forms a straight stem topped with a large, globe-shaped flower that rises high above the foliage and surrounding plants. The plants grow to around 70 to 90 centimetres tall. The flowers attract plenty of bees and butterflies.

The bulbs are size 10/12 and each produce one sturdy flower stem. They work well in the border between perennials, in large planters on the patio and as cut flowers in a vase. With 15 bulbs you fill a large pot of about 50 centimetres or create one eye-catching group; with 30 or 40 bulbs you place several groups in a longer border. With 60, 80 or 120 bulbs you plant a whole bed or a wide strip along the path, and with 160 or 320 bulbs you colour long borders or a large bed in purple and white; allow 15 to 25 bulbs per square metre. Combine the mix with other allium bulbs, such as smaller species that flower later in summer. You will find more greenery for outdoors among our outdoor plants.

When should you plant the Allium bulbs Purple-White mix?

Plant the Allium bulbs Purple-White mix in autumn, from mid-October to the end of November. The soil has then cooled to below 10 °C, so the bulbs still form roots without coming up above ground. As long as it is not freezing, you can also plant in December. Alliums need a cold period in the ground to flower well, so do not wait until spring.

When do the Allium bulbs Purple-White mix flower?

The Allium bulbs Purple-White mix flower in May and June, right between the last tulips and the first summer bloomers. Each flower head stays at its best for about three weeks, and even the spent heads remain decorative as seed heads. After a warm spring the first flowers often open in early May, after a cold spring a little later. In a well-drained spot the bulbs return year after year.

Care and tips Allium bulbs Purple-White mix

Set the bulbs pointed end up, 10 to 15 centimetres deep, about two to three times the bulb height, with 15 to 20 centimetres between them. They want loose, well-drained soil; lighten heavy clay with some sand or compost. In a pot or planter, make sure there is a drainage hole and a layer of gravel or clay pebbles at the bottom; you will find suitable models among our outdoor pots and baskets. The foliage often yellows during flowering. Leave it until it withers; perennials in front hide it nicely. A sprinkle of bulb fertiliser in spring is enough.

Water needs of the Allium bulbs Purple-White mix

In open ground alliums need little water; rain is usually sufficient. In pots and planters, keep the soil slightly moist in spring and water as soon as the top few centimetres are dry. Standing water makes the bulbs rot, so do not leave water in the saucer.

Light needs of the Allium bulbs Purple-White mix

Choose a spot in full sun. There the long stems stay straight, the purple flowers colour most deeply and the white ones stand out brightly. In partial shade they flower too, but the stems bend towards the light more quickly.

Are the Allium bulbs Purple-White mix toxic?

The Allium bulbs Purple-White mix are mildly toxic if ingested, especially for dogs and cats. Keep the bulbs and the plants out of reach of pets and young children.

How will my Allium bulbs Purple-White mix be shipped?

Your bulbs are carefully packed and shipped. That way they arrive safely and fresh from the grower.
