Product Description
The Tulip bulbs Pastel mix are a romantic blend of tulips in soft shades: pink, lilac, cream and apricot. The flowers stand on sturdy stems of about 40 centimetres and their colours flow gently into one another, so you get a calm, harmonious whole without any searching.
The bulbs are the standard size 11/12, a reliable size at which every bulb produces a full flower. You choose the quantity yourself, from a small pack to start with to a generous batch for a whole bed. With 12 bulbs you fill a pot or balcony box of about 35 centimetres, with 24 bulbs you create a loose group in the border or along the path. With 48 or 96 bulbs you plant a bed or a long strip; allow 50 to 70 bulbs per square metre. Put a few extra in a corner of the vegetable garden and you will have cut flowers for a pastel bouquet in spring. Lovely together with tulip bulbs in white or dark purple, which make the soft shades glow. You will find more greenery for outdoors among our outdoor plants.
When should you plant the Tulip bulbs Pastel mix?
Plant the Tulip bulbs Pastel mix in autumn, from mid-October to the end of November. The soil is then colder than 10 °C and the bulbs form roots without sprouting straight away. A mild December is also fine, as long as it is not freezing. Without winter cold there will be no flowers, which is why you do not plant these tulips in spring.
When do the Tulip bulbs Pastel mix flower?
The Tulip bulbs Pastel mix flower in March and April. Each flower lasts two to three weeks in the garden and about a week in a cool vase. A pot on a sunny, sheltered patio flowers a little earlier; a late, cold spring delays flowering. In a natural garden or in grass they can return for several years, although the flowers gradually become smaller.
Care and tips Tulip bulbs Pastel mix
Plant the bulbs pointed end up at a depth of 12 to 15 centimetres and leave 8 to 10 centimetres between them. Airy, free-draining soil prevents rot; on wet ground, work some sand into the top layer. Pots and containers always need a drainage hole and a layer of clay pebbles at the bottom. For a suitable pot, take a look at our outdoor pots and baskets. If you cut flowers for the vase, leave as much foliage on the plant as possible, and only remove the leaves after flowering once they have turned yellow. Feeding is hardly necessary: a handful of bulb fertiliser when the leaves appear.
Water needs of the Tulip bulbs Pastel mix
Bulbs in open ground usually manage with rainwater. If the autumn is exceptionally dry, water once after planting. In pots and containers, check weekly in spring whether the compost is still moist and water when the top few centimetres feel dry. A saucer full of water makes bulbs rot, so empty it.
Light needs of the Tulip bulbs Pastel mix
A sunny spot is ideal, with six or more hours of sun a day. Partial shade is possible too; the stems then grow a little longer and flowering is slightly less abundant.
Are the Tulip bulbs Pastel mix toxic?
The Tulip bulbs Pastel mix are mildly toxic if ingested, particularly the bulbs. Store and plant them out of reach of pets and young children. The sap can irritate sensitive skin, so garden gloves are useful.
How will my Tulip bulbs Pastel mix be shipped?
Your bulbs are carefully packed and shipped. That way they arrive safely and fresh from the grower.
