Product Description

The Anemone bulbs De Caen mix are small tubers of the well-known De Caen anemone in a mix of deep blue, scarlet, soft pink and white. The single flowers have papery petals around a dark, almost black centre and rise above finely cut foliage. The plants grow to about 25 to 30 centimetres tall.

The tubers are size 5/6. They suit the front of the border, the edge of a path, window boxes or pots on the patio, and also make lovely cut flowers. With 30 bulbs you create a few well-filled pots or a colourful spot in the border, with 60 bulbs a ribbon along the path. With 120 or 240 bulbs you plant a whole bed; allow 30 to 40 bulbs per square metre. Combine them with other spring-flowering flower bulbs, such as grape hyacinths or low daffodils. You will find more greenery for outdoors among our outdoor plants.

When should you plant the Anemone bulbs De Caen mix?

You plant the Anemone bulbs De Caen mix in autumn, from mid-October to the end of November, when the soil has dropped below 10 °C. If the ground is not yet frozen, you can also plant in December. A cool winter in the ground is part of their rhythm; in a severe winter, do cover the spot with a layer of leaves or straw.

When do the Anemone bulbs De Caen mix flower?

The Anemone bulbs De Caen mix flower from March to May. Because each plant keeps producing new buds, you enjoy flowers for weeks on end. A single flower stays open for about a week, often even longer in a vase. In a sheltered spot or in a pot they start earlier, after a cold spring later. In a spot they like, they return and slowly spread.

Care and tips Anemone bulbs De Caen mix

Soak the tubers in lukewarm water for two to four hours before planting; they swell up and sprout faster. Then plant them about 5 centimetres deep and 8 to 10 centimetres apart. They grow best in humus-rich, airy soil that drains well. For a pot, make sure there are holes in the base and a layer of clay pebbles underneath; have a look at our outdoor pots and baskets for a suitable pot. Pick off spent flowers and new ones will follow. Let the foliage die back naturally after flowering and give some bulb fertiliser in early spring.

Water needs of the Anemone bulbs De Caen mix

Anemones like slightly moist soil once they are growing. In spring, water if it has been dry for a week or more, in a pot about twice a week. Watering after planting is usually unnecessary unless the autumn is very dry. Take care: in waterlogged soil the tubers rot.

Light needs of the Anemone bulbs De Caen mix

A spot in partial shade or partial sun is ideal, for example with morning sun and shade in the afternoon. There the colours stay fresh and the soil dries out less quickly. In harsh afternoon sun the flowers fade faster; in deep shade you get fewer flowers.

Are the Anemone bulbs De Caen mix toxic?

The Anemone bulbs De Caen mix are mildly toxic if ingested, especially the tuber. Keep them out of reach of pets and young children. The sap can irritate the skin, so use garden gloves when planting and when cutting flowers.

How will my Anemone bulbs De Caen mix be shipped?

Your bulbs are carefully packed and shipped. That way they arrive safely and fresh from the grower.
