Product Description

The Allium bulbs Siculum XL bulbs are extra-large bulbs of Allium siculum, an ornamental onion with a character all of its own. On long, straight stems each plant carries a spray of hanging bell flowers in cream and pink. They grow to about 80 to 100 centimetres tall and attract plenty of bees and butterflies while in flower.

The XL bulbs are size 10/12, one size larger than usual for this species. A bigger bulb has more reserves and therefore produces a stronger stem with more bells per flower cluster, right from the first year. Ideal for a large tub by the front door or the back of the border. With 40 bulbs you fill two large tubs or set out a few generous groups; with 80 bulbs you give a whole border structure. With 160 or 320 bulbs you plant a large bed or a long strip that can naturalise later; allow 15 to 25 bulbs per square metre. They go beautifully with allium bulbs with purple globe flowers that bloom at the same time. You will find more greenery for outdoors among our outdoor plants.

When should you plant the Allium bulbs Siculum XL bulbs?

Autumn is planting time for the Allium bulbs Siculum XL bulbs, from mid-October to the end of November. The soil is then colder than 10 °C and the bulbs calmly form roots without coming up. If it is not yet freezing, you can also get started in December. The bulbs need a winter in the cold ground to flower, so do not keep them until spring.

When do the Allium bulbs Siculum XL bulbs flower?

In May and June the Allium bulbs Siculum XL bulbs are in flower. The bells do not all open at once, so a plant stays attractive for about three weeks. Afterwards the seed pods turn upright and the plant remains decorative for a long time. A mild spring brings flowering forward, a cold spring delays it. The bulbs return every year and can naturalise over time.

Care and tips Allium bulbs Siculum XL bulbs

Larger bulbs go a little deeper: set them pointed end up at 12 to 15 centimetres, about three times the bulb height, and leave 15 to 20 centimetres of space. The soil must drain well; on clay, mix some sand or fine gravel into the planting hole. A tub needs a hole in the base and a drainage layer of gravel; you will find roomy models among our outdoor pots and baskets. The narrow foliage already dies back around flowering; let it wither so the bulb recharges for next year. They also look lovely in a vase. A handful of bulb fertiliser in spring keeps the bulbs strong.

Water needs of the Allium bulbs Siculum XL bulbs

After planting, watering once is enough to settle the soil around the bulbs. Beyond that, rain provides enough moisture in the garden. In a tub, water during the growing season as soon as the top layer is dry, but never so much that water is left standing.

Light needs of the Allium bulbs Siculum XL bulbs

Put them in a sunny spot where they get at least half a day of direct light. The more sun, the sturdier the long stems and the richer the flowering. In too much shade the stems start to lean.

Are the Allium bulbs Siculum XL bulbs toxic?

The Allium bulbs Siculum XL bulbs are mildly toxic if ingested, for people and for pets such as dogs and cats. Before planting, store them where pets and young children cannot reach them.

How will my Allium bulbs Siculum XL bulbs be shipped?

Your bulbs are carefully packed and shipped. That way they arrive safely and fresh from the grower.
