Product Description

The Flower bulb mix Blue is a composed mix of different spring bulbs in shades of blue and purple, complemented by a few other colours. Because it contains low and somewhat taller varieties, you get a layered display of about 10 to 40 centimetres tall. All the bulbs are hardy.

The bulbs are size 10/12. This mix is made for borders and planters. With 125 bulbs you fill a few roomy planters or about one and a half square metres of border, with 250 bulbs a long blue strip along the path. With 500 or 1000 bulbs you plant a whole bed or a large part of the garden; allow 75 to 100 bulbs per square metre. Combine them with other flower bulb mixes, such as a mix in yellow or white, for a fresh contrast. You will find more greenery for outdoors among our outdoor plants.

When should you plant the Flower bulb mix Blue?

The right moment to plant the Flower bulb mix Blue is between mid-October and the end of November. The soil has then cooled to below 10 °C, so the bulbs root but do not sprout yet. If it does not freeze, December is fine too. All the bulbs in this mix need a cold period to flower, so do not wait until spring.

When does the Flower bulb mix Blue flower?

The Flower bulb mix Blue flowers in March and April. The earliest varieties open in March and the later ones follow in April, so something is in bloom for several weeks. Each flower lasts about one to two weeks. In a pot on a sunny patio flowering starts a little earlier, after a cold spring it shifts later. Afterwards they return and can naturalise.

Care and tips Flower bulb mix Blue

As a rule of thumb, plant a bulb two to three times as deep as it is tall. For the larger bulbs in this mix that means 10 to 15 centimetres, for the small varieties 5 to 8 centimetres. Keep 5 to 10 centimetres between them. They grow best in loose soil that drains water well. In a planter or pot a drainage layer of gravel or clay pebbles is essential; among our outdoor pots and baskets you will find planters in various sizes. After flowering, only cut away the faded flowers and leave the foliage until it has yellowed. Give some bulb fertiliser as soon as the first tips appear above the ground.

Water needs of the Flower bulb mix Blue

Bulbs in open ground rarely need watering; the rain in autumn and spring is usually enough. Only give a good can of water during a long dry spell after planting. In planters the soil dries out faster; water there in spring as soon as the top layer feels dry. If water stays at the bottom of the planter, the bulbs will rot.

Light needs of the Flower bulb mix Blue

This mix flowers best in a sunny spot. With at least half a day of sun the stems stay compact and the blue and purple shades show well. Under trees that come into leaf late, they also get enough light in spring.

Is the Flower bulb mix Blue toxic?

The Flower bulb mix Blue is mildly toxic if ingested, especially the bulbs. Keep them out of reach of pets and young children. In some people the sap causes skin irritation; garden gloves prevent this.

How will my Flower bulb mix Blue be shipped?

Your bulbs are carefully packed and shipped. That way they arrive safely and fresh from the grower.
