Product Description

The Daffodil bulbs Carlton are bulbs of a classic large-cupped daffodil with large, bright yellow flowers. The flowers have a wide, slightly ruffled cup and stand on sturdy stems of around 45 centimetres. Carlton is one of the best-known and strongest daffodils: it returns every year and naturalises easily in grass.

The bulbs are size 12/14, which makes them a good size. They look lovely in the border, along the path, in troughs and pots or in groups in the lawn. With 15 bulbs you fill a large pot or trough, with 30 bulbs a generous spot in the border. With 60 or 120 bulbs you can plant a whole bed or a yellow strip in the grass; allow 30 to 50 bulbs per square metre. Combine them with other daffodil bulbs, such as white varieties that flower at the same time. You will find more greenery for outdoors among our outdoor plants.

When should you plant the Daffodil bulbs Carlton?

The best time to plant the Daffodil bulbs Carlton is from mid-October to the end of November, once the soil has cooled to below 10 °C. Daffodils like to root early, so preferably plant them at the start of that period. If the ground is not frozen, you can plant until December. Without winter cold the bulbs will not flower, so planting in spring does not work.

When do the Daffodil bulbs Carlton flower?

The Daffodil bulbs Carlton flower in March and April. Each flower stays beautiful for about two weeks, and because not all buds open at once, a group flowers for longer. In a pot in a sunny, sheltered spot they flower earlier, after a cold spring later. As a cut flower, keep them separate for a night first, because the sap from the stems makes other flowers in the vase wilt faster. Carlton spreads every year, so the clumps become fuller and fuller.

Care and tips Daffodil bulbs Carlton

Plant the bulbs pointed end up, about 15 centimetres deep and 10 to 15 centimetres apart. They tolerate most garden soils, as long as they do not stay wet for long; mix some sand into heavy soil. In a pot, give them a layer of gravel or clay pebbles at the bottom; among our outdoor pots and baskets you will find a pot that fits. After flowering, cut off the spent flowers but leave the foliage for six weeks until it turns yellow; only mow the grass there after that. If a clump becomes too dense after a few years, divide it in summer and replant the bulbs further apart. A little bulb fertiliser in early spring helps on poor soil.

Water needs of the Daffodil bulbs Carlton

In open ground, rainwater is usually enough. Only in a dry autumn should you water after planting. In a pot or trough, water about once a week as soon as the leaves come up. Do not leave water in the saucer, because the bulbs rot in wet soil.

Light needs of the Daffodil bulbs Carlton

A sunny spot is ideal: that is where they flower most abundantly and the stems are sturdiest. In partial shade beneath deciduous trees they still flower well, because those trees are still bare in early spring.

Are the Daffodil bulbs Carlton toxic?

The Daffodil bulbs Carlton are toxic if ingested, especially the bulb. Keep them out of reach of pets and young children. The sap can cause skin irritation, so wear garden gloves when planting and cutting.

How will my Daffodil bulbs Carlton be shipped?

Your bulbs are carefully packed and shipped. That way they arrive safely and fresh from the grower.
